Carla Accardi was an important Italian artist and among the greatest exponents of abstract art. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Palermo and moved to Rome in 1946. In 1947, together with Attardi, Consagra, Dorazio, Guerrini, Perilli, Sanfilippo, and Turcato, she founded the “Forma 1”, a group of formalists and of Marxist inspiration. In 1948, she took part in the XXIV Venice Biennale, as well as in the exhibition Abstract Art in Italy at the Gallery of Rome. In 1950, she took part in her first solo exhibitions. In 1964, she was invited with a personal room to the XXXII Venice Biennale . In these years, she started to realize her first works on sicofoil, a transparent plastic material used for the first time in the artistic field. In 1988, she returned to the Venice Biennale with a personal room, and in 1995 she participated in the exhibition: “The Italian Metamorphosis” at the Guggenheim Museum in New York. In 1998, her hometown dedicated an anthological exhibition to her, “Carla Accardi: Works 1947 – 1997”, curated by Claudio Cerritelli and promoted by the Officina Association. She died in Rome in 2014.
