EDDart, in collaboration with YOLK, presents from December 6 to January 21, 2023 Portraits and Dreams, a group exhibition centered on the theme of portraiture. The exhibition provides an opportunity to support the extraordinary work of YOLK™, which for years has been committed to combating educational poverty by creating and shaping extracurricular time in the most vulnerable neighborhoods of Rome and Palermo.
Portraiture here does not merely depict the person sitting in front of the artist, but rather embodies the artist’s own desires and obsessions. How much, then, does the portrayed subject resemble the artist? How much does it reveal the artist’s world, or the world the artist wishes to inhabit? Guided by these questions, the exhibition brings together works by artists closely followed by EDDart, such as Mario Schifano, Giosetta Fioroni, and Cesare Tacchi, alongside other authors who revolutionized the concept of portraiture, including Andy Warhol, of whom two versions of the iconic Marilyn, a twentieth-century icon, will be exhibited. The contemporary section will feature previously unseen ceramic works by Roberto Ruspoli, marking his return to exhibiting in Rome.
Also on view is a video created during WENDY, one of YOLK™’s projects in Palermo. Inspired by the work of American photographer and educator Wendy Ewald, Ornella Mazzola and Andrea Petrosino developed a photographic journey together with nine boys and girls from Palermo’s Kalsa district during the months of May and June 2022. The photographs produced by the participants were exhibited last July at Palazzo Butera in Palermo.
Part of the proceeds from the sale of the artworks exhibited at EDDart will be donated to YOLK™, and during the opening, scheduled for Tuesday, December 6, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, a poster by the association will be given to all attendees, and individual donations may be made.
